The GAERF 2010 Student Design Competition invites students to be creative by taking their original design from concept to finished product as they:

Create a theme for GRAPH EXPO 2011: design artwork to support the theme, incorporating the GRAPH EXPO logo, show dates and location, and produce a product that incorporates the theme and logo (i.e., advertisement, web site page, postcard, etc.).

The competition is open to all students attending secondary or post-secondary institutions in the continental United States who are studying in a graphic communications/printing, advertising, graphic design or interactive media program. Instructors are responsible for submitting the entry, limited to three per instructor, which will become the property of GAERF.

Design competition entries must be received by June 15, 2010. Those selected by GAERF will be judged by the Graphic Arts Show Company, the producer of GRAPH EXPO 2011. Winners and their instructors will be notified by August 15, 2010.

Among the total six winning entries will be: two first place awards, one at the secondary level and one at the post-secondary level; two second place awards, one at the secondary level and one at the post-secondary level; and, two third place awards, one at the secondary level and one at the post-secondary level.

First place winners and their instructors will receive two-day all-inclusive paid trips to attend GRAPH EXPO 2010 in Chicago, IL. In addition, the winners will be presented at the show with $2,000 awards during Career Awareness Day on October 6, 2010. The second place winners will be awarded $1,500, and the third place winners will receive $1,000.

“GAERF is proud to support education initiatives that encourage students’ creativity and skill in the art of design and production,” said GAERF President Ralph Nappi. “This competition will recognize the talent of our best and brightest students, as well as the significant commitment of their instructors.”

There are many benefits to using this Google service, such as:

• Having the ability to give a standard phone number to industry leaders and contacts
• We can have this one number forward to multiple phones. For example, we could have the eboard as a forwarding list
• Voicemail is accessible through the web. This will allow us to check any voicemails online. Additionally, Google transcribes each message, so we will have them in a text format as well

Now, even though it looks out-dated, there are a few features that the old site has that will be implemented on the new site. For example:

• Current Members: it would be great for organizations to be able to see our current members. We will implement this in the very near future, along with a GAA Alumni list (showing past members, and hopefully, what they’re doing now).
• Photo Galleries: currently, our site is lacking an actual photo gallery. We do have a Flickr account, but it is lacking updates. Speaking of, if anyone has any photos they’d liked to share, please email the photo group.
• Industry Resources: this is actually awesome, and we definitely will be bringing these to you before the end of 2009. We plan to have links to industry leaders, scholarships, resume builders, and job sites.

Sure we’ve come a long way, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. Keep an eye on the site for the numerous features we have planned!

University Internship Coordinators,

As we begin our fall recruiting season we’d like to take the opportunity to touch base with everyone. We are looking forward to another great round of qualified intern candidates to start streaming through the pipelines. Please keep in mind, the earlier we can start touching base with students for next summer’s internship the better for everyone! Typically all summer interns at Quad/Graphics have been hired by the end of November. So, we encourage you to speak with your students and have them apply early so they aren’t lost in the shuffle in November! We hope that the semester finds everyone doing well. Take care and enjoy the fall!
